Protect Your Smile With Inlays & Onlays
At Cedarbrae Dental in Scarborough, we know that inlays and onlays are dental restorations used to repair teeth that have been significantly damaged from injury or decay. Often made from porcelain, resin, or a combination of both materials, inlays fit within the cusps (edges) of the tooth while onlays cover one or more cusps completely.
How are inlays and onlays placed?
The process begins with an evaluation of your needs. Once a detailed treatment plan is in place, during your first appointment, an impression will be taken of the affected tooth and sent to our lab, where your custom-made inlay or onlay will be created. Our dentist will then place a temporary restoration until your permanent version is ready. Once we’ve received your customized restoration, our dentist will remove the temporary restoration, check the fit and appearance of your completed inlay or onlay, and permanently bond it in place.
What benefits do inlays and onlays provide?
In addition to providing a natural finish, inlays and onlays can improve the strength and durability of your tooth and help prevent further damage by sealing out cavity-causing bacteria. In addition, when cared for diligently, these restorations have the potential to last for 10 years or longer.
Who should consider these restorations?
Both an inlay and onlay can be ideal for patients who have a damaged tooth that requires more than a filling but doesn’t yet need a dental crown. They can also provide an effective solution for large fillings that have become worn or damaged over time and require replacing.
At Cedarbrae Dental, we are committed to providing our patients with services that optimize and protect their smiles. If you have questions about inlays or onlays, call us today!
